What She Will Wear: Wedding Guest Attire

I was eager to try styling my final dress and hand bag from the moving sale since I plan to wear them to an evening wedding later in the summer. Here I paired my cheetah hand bag with a cheetah belt, blue cardigan, and previously thrifted heels.

I just LOVE that this classic black dress from The Limited has pockets! How would you style it?

What She Wore Monday

After a casual Friday and weekend attire I was glad to hit the ground running Monday morning with another new-to-me outfit. This classic red sheath dress from The Limited can be worn to work and easily transition to any after work events I have planned. Today I paired it with a gray blazer, pendant necklace, and previously thrifted heels.

What She Wore Thursday

We were giving a special casual day at work on Wednesday (I'm not complaining!) so today was the next opportunity I had to wear one of my new finds from this past weekend's moving sale

Today I wore my new thrifted blouse, vintage bag, and previously thrifted flats (which are hard to see in these pictures. Promise they're cute!).

I am also wearing makeup samples from Real Purity. I was very impressed with the makeups color and longevity, especially for organic makeup! You can request your own free samples from their website here and will only pay shipping. Sure beats paying for one of those sample box subscriptions! #winning

*This post was not sponsored by Real Purity. I simply want to share my fun finds with you!

What She Wore Tuesday

The weather was a bit warmer today and I was excited to try my new bright floral spring dress. Paired with a cardigan and heels this dress made a perfect work outfit and will surely be worn many more times this seasons. The cardigan and heels were both previously thrifted too! What are your favorite thrift store finds?

What She Wore Monday

Just like the first day of school I was excited to start this work week off in one of my new finds! I styled my new striped and beaded Gap top with green jeans, a brown belt, brown sandals, and a brown bag. I have recently been enjoying mixing my neutrals, gasp I know, both blacks and browns and was very happy with this look. Do you mix your neutrals?

Like Daughter, Like Mother....again!

Marissa has done it again! She has inspired me to get crafty with the sewing machine. I enjoyed her post here about a plaid shirt refashion. So I ran right to my local thrift shop and started looking for a nice plaid shirt. Here is what I found. It was such a lovely shade of blue and was a very nice quality fabric so it was the winner. Because it was a quality fabric the plaid is woven instead of printed onto the fabric, some of the reconstruction was easier, and the end result more attractive. The seams were flat felled seams, and they always make a nicer product. I replaced those with regular construction seams. This is just for fun after all.
The shirt is a man's medium. It didn't really matter what size I chose because there would be so much altering going on. If you choose a refashion project think about how much alteration you will need to make to the sleeve length and shoulder area.
Well lets get serious about this thing. You are going to have to cut it sooner or later. Here we go. Start by cutting up the side seams and all the way to where the sleeves attach. Now cut the shoulder seam away from the body of the shirt, being careful to maintain the original shape of the sleeve. The next step is to cut the sleeve seam. Cut the full length of the sleeve. Do not cut through the cuff of the sleeve. I cut the sleeve seam to with in 3-4 inches of the cuff. At that point I opened the cuff seam where it attaches to the sleeve. Open just enough to ease the sleeve seam out. I will want to complete the sleeve seam and then reinsert into the cuff at the end of the project. I used this method so that I didn't have to change the sleeve placket. It was very nicely constructed and had multiple buttons on the placket.

Here is what it will look like when you get the side seams opened and the sleeves removed. You can't see in the photo very well but I have opened the sleeve seams nearly all the way at this point. Being careful not to cut the cuff.

Now that you have your shirt cut, you start the engineering process of reconstruction. Start by deciding how wide the shoulder seam should be. I put on a shirt that fits nicely and measured the width of the shirt from the collar to the shoulder seam. It was five inches for me. Keep in mind for this project the end product is supposed to be a little box-ie. (If we wanted to make a more fitted shirt we would need to deconstruct a bit further before reconstruction.) After I knew what the shoulder width should be I knew how much fabric to trim away from the shirt. I used the same measurement and followed the original shape of the garment. Then I measured how long the sleeve would need to be. I guesstimated that length by putting the sleeve onto my arm and bending my arm at the elbow. I pinned the top of the sleeve to the shirt that I had on, and looked in the mirror for a point of reference. When I was satisfied with the length of the sleeve I marked where the shoulder seam would need to go. The picture above shows that I needed to cut off 4 inches. I cut off 4 inches all the way across the top of the sleeve piece being careful to maintain the original sleeve shape. Re -attach the sleeve to the shirt. It will no longer match exactly because we have made so many alteration. Be sure that your sleeve is attached to the shirt with out any puckers.
Once the sleeve has been reattached to the armscye you are ready to determine how to trim the side seams. I used one of my dresses that fits loosely as a guide. If you have a pattern that you like, that would be a really good guide also. When you determine where you will trim be sure to make each side match each other. After I had the fabric trimmed away from the side seams I re-sewed the seams extending the seam from the hem of the shirt all the way out to the end of the sleeve. I finished the side seams with serging and reinserted the sleeve into the cuff and top stitched the cuff. That was the last step! Yay, it wasn't tooooo labor intensive and the shirt will be a fun addition to my winter wardrobe.

I will probably pair the shirt with jeans and boots when I wear them outside of the house. It is a nice warm and soft shirt and will be a trendy/fun thing for me to wear for the season. Thanks mama for teaching me how to get crafty with refashions.

Side-by-Side Challenge: NEON

Today I am participating in a NEON side-by-side challenge with the lovely ladies above. Don't their ensembles inspire you?

This challenge inspired me to add a trendy neon piece to my wardrobe but I wasn't willing to spend a lot on it. I am currently investing in classic, staple pieces that will help me to build up my professional wardrobe so this re-fashion was the perfect option for an inexpensive summer piece. To see my before and after picture as well as the re-fashion process please visit my neon floral dress re-do post.

Flashback Friday: Kimono Style Blouse

For one of Paul's birthday celebrations a few years ago I made myself a kimono style blouse with a Mandarin collar, frog closures, and black piping. I like this style but would prefer to have a longer and more fitted blouse and would definitely make adjustments to the pattern if I were to make it again.

Flashback Friday: Spring Achievement

I can hardly believe that I have been blogging for almost two years now and haven't ever mentioned 4-H Spring Achievement! Every year that I was a 4-H member I took a sewing project to the fair at the end of the summer, but it had to be done in time for Spring Achievement where you could model your projects and be judged on your style review as well as your workmanship. This also gave you a chance to make any last minute adjustments to your project, if necessary, before the fair so you can win the coveted blue ribbon.

My sewing project.
I also wore this peach dress to my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary party. It was a hit!

My buymanship project.
I purchased the above outfit as part of my "buymanship" project the same year. The denim jacket and lavender blouse were purchased on sale at retail stores and the green floral skirt was purchased at a secondhand store. For this project I broke down the estimated cost per wear of each item, something that I still do!

Sew Help Me Floral Clutch Showcase

I recently sent floral bow clutches to two of my favorite bloggers, Amanda and Jennie from 2 Girls in 2 Cities, and asked them to style the clutches with a spring ensemble. Yesterday Amanda styled her clutch with a pink tweed jacket, skinny jeans, and a pair of colorful pumps. How would you style your Sew Help Me by Marissa bow clutch?

Flashback Friday

Oh boy, isn't this good for a few laughs? Now don't be hatin'. Remember this is flashback, all the way to the early '90s. We were on style for the era. The outfit that I am wearing is actually a rich coral color. You can see what Marissa has done with the scraps all these many years later, here. I made this top and skirt for my younger sisters bridal shower and then the later worn it for my parents 50th wedding anniversary party. My mother and I got crafty with the dark green velveteen and satin flower girl dresses that Marissa and Krista are wearing for that same wedding. Because our family is so frugal and the girls felt like princesses in those dresses they also wore wore them for the anniversary party. I hope you get crafty soon.

Upscale Sweater Skirt and Coastal Glasses

I can't tell you all how long I've been looking for the perfect sweater to upscale/refashion into a skirt. I had countless matching sweater and sweater skirt sets as a child and LOVE that they are in fashion again!

We're we cute?!
Needless to say I was THRILLED when I found this sweater skirt because it took a lot less work to upscale and was adorable.
Before: Does this skirt says 90's mom to anyone else?!
I did a lot of reading up on sewing on knits before I began this project because I didn't want it to unravel when I cut off the extra length. In the end I used my rotary cutter to make a clean cut.
Cutting off a few inches.
Next I serged the unfinished edge using two needles and four threads. Finally I turned up an inch and sewed the hem down using a stretch stitch.
Serged and ready to be hemmed.
I love how the finished product turned out. I styled my newly upscaled sweater skirt with a bright cardi, dark tights, boots, and my new glasses from Coastal.com and was ready for date night with my husband.
Finished product.

New hem line, much higher!
I recently ordered these glasses from Coastal.com FOR FREE because they were my first purchase. I only had to pay for shipping and handling! I suggest you check them out.
